Alright, listen up, y’all. My back’s been killin’ me, shootin’ pains down my leg somethin’ fierce. Doc called it “sciatica,” some fancy name for a pain in the butt, literally! But he told me about this trick with a tennis ball, and wouldn’t ya know, it actually works! So, I’m gonna tell ya how to use a tennis ball for that there sciatica pain, ’cause I ain’t one to keep good secrets to myself.
First off, you gotta find yourself a tennis ball. Don’t go stealin’ the dog’s favorite toy now, get yourself a new one, or find an old one lyin’ around. Then, you gotta find a spot on the floor. Not too hard, not too soft, just right. I like to use a rug, gives a little cushion but still lets you get in there good.

- Step one: Sit yourself down on that there floor. Legs out in front of ya, kinda like you’re gonna do a sit-up, but don’t go doin’ no sit-ups now, we’re fixin’ your back, not your belly! Legs should be about hip-width apart, you know, comfortable like.
- Step two: Take that tennis ball and stick it right under your behind. Yeah, right in the fleshy part, where your butt meets your leg. That’s where that pesky nerve is hidin’, causin’ all that trouble.
- Step three: Now, this is the important part. You gotta wiggle around a bit, roll that ball around until you find a spot that feels…well, it ain’t gonna feel good, but it’ll feel like somethin’. A tender spot, a knot, somethin’ that makes you go “Oof!” That’s the spot you wanna work on.
- Step four: Once you find that spot, just sit on it. Yeah, just sit there. Let your weight press down on that ball. Don’t bounce, don’t wiggle, just sit. For a few seconds, maybe ten, maybe twenty. Then, move the ball a little bit, find another sore spot, and do it again.
Now, some folks say you gotta roll back and forth, but I ain’t so sure about that. Seems to me like just sittin’ on it does the trick. You gotta press down on that muscle, that “pear-a-form-is” muscle the doc called it. Fancy name for a muscle that’s actin’ up, if you ask me. Anyway, you press down on it, and it kinda loosens up, lets that nerve breathe a little, and the pain starts to go away.
It ain’t magic, mind you. It takes a little time, and you gotta do it regular. I do it every mornin’ after I get out of bed, and then again at night before I go to sleep. And sometimes, if I’m feelin’ extra sore, I’ll do it in the afternoon too. Just a few minutes each time, that’s all it takes. And let me tell ya, it makes a world of difference. I can walk, I can stand, I can even bend over without feelin’ like a bolt of lightnin’ shot through my leg.
And here’s a little somethin’ else I learned: You don’t gotta just use it on your butt. Sometimes, that pain goes down your leg, right? Well, you can use that tennis ball on your leg too. Just roll it up and down, find those sore spots, and press on ’em. It helps loosen things up, gets the blood flowin’, and makes the pain go away. It’s like givin’ yourself a little massage, only you don’t gotta pay nobody to do it.
Now, I ain’t no doctor, and I ain’t sayin’ this is gonna cure ya. But it sure helped me, and it might just help you too. So, go find yourself a tennis ball, give it a try, and see if it don’t make your back feel a whole lot better. And if it doesn’t, well, go see a real doctor, not some old lady like me!
One last thing! Don’t push yourself too hard. If it hurts real bad, stop. You ain’t tryin’ to make things worse. Just gentle pressure, that’s all you need. And if you’re worried about doin’ it wrong, ask your doctor or someone who knows about these things. Better safe than sorry, I always say.
