Hey everyone, today I wanted to share a little project I’ve been working on – building a boxing ring. Yeah, you heard that right, a boxing ring! It might sound crazy, but it’s been a really fun and rewarding experience, and I’m here to tell you all about it.
First off, I gotta say, I’m not a professional builder or anything. Just a regular guy with a bit of a wild idea. I’ve always been a big boxing fan, and the thought of having my own ring just seemed so cool. So, I started doing some research. I read articles with titles like “Why is a boxing ring square?” and “The origins and evolution of the boxing ring.” Turns out, they call it a “ring” even though it’s square. And it’s also sometimes called “the squared circle.” Go figure!

Getting Started
I learned that a standard boxing ring is usually between 18 to 22 feet square, surrounded by ropes. I decided to go for a smaller version, around 16 feet, to fit in my backyard. So, the first thing I did was measure out the space and mark the corners. Then, it was time to get my hands dirty.
Building the Frame
I used wood to build the frame, securing the corner posts first. This was probably the trickiest part, making sure everything was level and sturdy. I used metal brackets to reinforce the corners and make sure they could handle some action. After the corner posts, I added the side beams, creating a square frame. I used a lot of screws and bolts, probably way more than needed, but hey, better safe than sorry, right?
Adding the Ropes
Next up was the ropes. I used four strands of thick rope, like the real boxing rings. I attached them to the corner posts using heavy-duty eye bolts. Tightening the ropes was a bit of a workout, I’m not gonna lie. I wanted them to be taut but also have a bit of give. I tested them out by leaning and pushing against them to make sure they were secure.
Laying the Floor
For the floor, I used plywood sheets. I laid them down over the frame, screwing them into the side beams. Once the plywood was down, I covered it with a layer of foam padding. I wanted to make sure the surface had some cushioning for safety. On top of the padding, I stretched a large canvas tarp, pulling it tight and securing it around the edges of the frame.
The Finishing Touches
With the main structure done, I added some finishing touches. I painted the frame a nice, glossy black. I even stenciled a little logo in the center of the canvas, just for fun. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I’m pretty darn proud of it.

Testing it Out
Of course, I had to test it out! I invited a few buddies over, and we did some light sparring. It was a blast! The ring held up great, and it felt amazing to be bouncing around in something I built with my own two hands. We had a few laughs, a bit of sweat, and a whole lot of fun.
So, that’s the story of my boxing ring project. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I learned a ton, got a good workout, and now I have a unique spot to hang out and have some fun with my friends. If you’re thinking about doing something like this, I say go for it! Just be prepared to put in the effort and maybe get a few splinters along the way. It’s a heck of an experience, and who knows, you might just surprise yourself with what you can create. This whole thing has been a wild ride, but hey, that’s what makes life interesting, right?
