So, I’ve been digging into Rice football lately, trying to figure out if they’re any good. I mean, you hear the name, but do they actually bring the heat on the field? Here’s what I found out.
First off, I checked out their track record. Turns out, they’ve bagged eight conference championships. Five of those were all theirs, and three they shared. Not too shabby, right?

Then I started looking at their recent performance. Back in 2018, which was the coach’s first season, they only won two games. It was rough, I won’t lie. The next year, they bumped it up to three wins. In 2021, they snagged four wins. And in 2022, they got five wins and even made it to the LendingTree Bowl, but they only got in because of some academic performance rule when there aren’t enough teams that qualify the normal way. Still, a bowl game is a bowl game!
Head Coach Stuff
I also found out that there’s a new head coach, Scott Abell. Looks like he just joined, so it’s kinda early to see what he’s gonna do.
Game Day Stuff
- Schedule: I saw their schedule, and it looks packed. Lots of games to watch.
- Scores: Found some of their recent scores. They’ve had some wins, some losses. It’s a mixed bag, you know?
- Stats: They’ve got all sorts of stats online. Passing yards, rushing yards, all that jazz. I’m not a huge numbers guy, but it’s there if you want it.
The Buzz
People are talking about them, that’s for sure. Highlights are all over the place, and there are expert analyses breaking down their plays. It’s interesting to see what the pros think.
The Big Rivalry
Oh, and get this – they have this big rivalry with the University of Houston. It’s called the Bayou Bucket Classic. Sounds intense, right? I bet those games are wild.
Looking Ahead
They’ve got this quarterback, E.J. Warner, who seems to be a big deal. And they just hired a new head coach. I also checked out some predictions for the 2024 season. Some folks are optimistic, some are not. We’ll see what happens.

So, are they good? Well, they’ve got some history, some recent wins, a new coach, and a lot of buzz. They’re definitely a team to watch. I wouldn’t say they’re dominating, but they’re holding their own, especially in that Bayou Bucket Classic against Houston. I’m keeping an eye on them, that’s for sure.
Anyway, that’s my little deep dive into Rice football. Hope you found it interesting!
