Okay, so I wanted to try out one of these NFL survivor pools that everyone’s been talking about. I’d heard about them but never actually joined one, so I thought, why not? This season seemed like as good a time as any to get my feet wet. First thing I did was look up “how do NFL survivor pools work?” because I honestly had no clue beyond the basic idea.
After reading a bunch of articles and guides, I finally felt like I understood the rules. Basically, you pick one team each week that you think will win their game. Sounds easy, right? But here’s the catch – you can only pick a team once the whole season. So, you can’t just keep picking the best teams every week. This made things way more interesting and complicated than I initially thought.

Next, I looked for a pool to join. There are tons of them online, but I decided to join one with some buddies from work. It was a small group, which I figured would be good for my first time. We used a website to manage the pool, which made it super easy to make our picks and track everyone’s progress. We all chipped in some money to make it more fun, winner takes all!
My Strategy (or Lack Thereof)
Week 1 rolled around, and it was time to make my first pick. I spent way too much time looking at matchups, trying to figure out who had the best chance of winning. I went with my gut and picked a team that seemed like a safe bet. They won, phew! I survived the first week, but a few others in my pool weren’t so lucky. It felt good to make it through, but I knew it was just the beginning.
As the weeks went by, it got tougher. I started trying to plan, but it’s tricky! You need to pick a winner each week, but save good teams for later. I did a bit of reading on strategy, things like picking against the worst teams or not looking too far ahead, but honestly, it felt like a crapshoot sometimes. Some weeks I’d spend hours researching, other times I’d just go with my gut.
The Thrill of Victory, the Agony of Defeat

-
Wins: Every time my team won, it was a rush. Especially when it was a close game, I’d be glued to the TV, yelling at the players like they could hear me. There were a couple of weeks where I barely made it through, and those were some of the most exciting games I’ve ever watched.
-
Losses: I got knocked out in Week 10. It was a bummer, especially since I felt like I had a good pick that week. But that’s how it goes. One wrong pick, and you’re done. It stung, but it made me appreciate how hard it is to win one of these things.
Lessons Learned
Even though I didn’t win, I had a blast. It made watching the NFL way more exciting, and it was fun to compete with my friends. I definitely learned a lot about strategy, and I’m already thinking about what I’ll do differently next year. For anyone thinking about joining a survivor pool, I’d say go for it! Just be prepared to get hooked, it’s way more addictive than you’d think.
Next season, I’m coming back stronger and smarter. Well, hopefully smarter. Maybe I’ll even win the whole thing. Who knows? That’s the beauty of these survivor pools – anything can happen!
