Well, now, let me tell ya ’bout them Georgetown Hoyas and their 1985 basketball team. I ain’t no expert on all them fancy statistics and whatnot, but I do know a thing or two ’bout basketball, especially when it comes to teams that leave a mark. And let me tell ya, this team sure left a mark, alright!
So, this here 1984-85 Georgetown Hoyas team, they was somethin’ else. They played in the NCAA Division I, which is where all the big schools go to show off their skills. The coach of the team back then was John Thompson. Now, I ain’t got much to say ’bout the fella, but folks say he was mighty good at his job, real good at gettin’ the best outta his boys. He was in his 14th year as the coach, and they played their home games down at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland.

Now, let’s talk about them players. The Hoyas was a team full of talent, no doubt. One of the biggest names back then was none other than Patrick Ewing. You know, the big fella who went on to be the first overall pick in the NBA draft later that year, in 1985. People say he was one of the best to ever do it, and I reckon they ain’t wrong. This big guy was tall, strong, and could shoot like no one’s business. Ewing was a force, that’s for sure.
And then there was this fella named Alonzo Mourning. Now, he didn’t make his name with the Hoyas just yet, but he was already showin’ signs of greatness. Folks didn’t know it at the time, but he too would go on to be a big deal in the NBA. He got picked second overall in the NBA draft a few years later, in 1992.
But let me tell ya, this team wasn’t just about Ewing and Mourning. They had some other boys who could play too, like Reggie Williams, a fine shooter, and Michael Jackson, not the singer but a good player all the same. There was also a fella named Vernon Butler, who I hear had some talent, but not as much attention as some of the other boys. It was a team full of guys who could hold their own, no doubt.
Now, as for the rest of the season, they played 32 games, and let me tell ya, they didn’t do too bad. They finished the season with a 24-8 record. Not too shabby, eh? They had an 11-5 record in Big East Conference play, which was a real good showing, if you ask me. But, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Unfortunately, the Hoyas lost their last 7 games of the season. Yup, that’s right, they hit a rough patch there at the end.
In the end, the Georgetown Hoyas had a decent season, and a lotta people say they was one of the better teams in the country, even though they couldn’t get all the way to the top. But what really makes this team special is all the talent they had. Ewing, Mourning, and others went on to do big things in the NBA, and that’s somethin’ that makes the 1984-85 team stand out in the history of college basketball.

So, even though they didn’t win the big one that year, the Georgetown Hoyas left a legacy. A legacy full of tall players, big dreams, and some mighty fine basketball.
