Well, shoot, you wanna know how many days till baseball, huh? Let me tell ya, it ain’t so simple. It depends on what kinda baseball you’re talkin’ about.
See, there’s that spring trainin’ thing. Them fellas start gettin’ ready way early. This year, they started in February, around the 20th, I think. Yep, February 20th. Heard it on the radio. They go down to Florida and Arizona, where it’s warm, and start throwin’ the ball around. That’s spring trainin’. They do that for a whole month, maybe more.
Then there’s the real baseball, the one that counts. They call it “Opening Day”. That’s when all the teams start playin’ for real. This year, 2024, the Dodgers and Padres, they went all the way to some place called Seoul, in Korea, and started playin’ on March 20th and 21st. Then, for most of the other teams, Opening Day was on March 28th. That’s a Thursday, I remember ‘cause that’s when I go to bingo.
Now, if you’re thinkin’ about next year, 2025, well, they said spring trainin’ is gonna start on February 20th again. So, if you wanna see them practice, that’s when you gotta go. But if you want the real games, you gotta wait till, I dunno, end of March or somethin’. They play a whole lotta games, like 162 games, they say. Takes ‘em about six months, all the way through the summer and into the fall.
So, see, it ain’t easy to say exactly how many days. It’s like askin’ how many days till summer. It depends on what you mean by summer!
If you’re countin’ the days from now, well, you gotta figure out what day it is today, and then you gotta count all the way till next February for spring trainin’ or next March for the regular season. That’s a lot of countin’. My grandkids, they could do it on their phones, I reckon. Me? I just wait till I hear it on the radio.

They play a lot of games, them fellas. Nine innings mostly, they say. And it takes a long time, too. Couple hours, sometimes more. My husband, he used to love watchin’ the baseball. He’d sit there all afternoon, cheerin’ and yellin’. I never really got it, all that runnin’ around and hittin’ a little ball. But he loved it, so I’d sit with him sometimes. He’d explain it all to me, but I still didn’t get it. He’d say, “See, they gotta get three outs to end the innin’.” And I’d say, “Okay, hon.” And then they’d get three outs, and then they’d just start all over again! Seemed like a lot of work for nothin’ to me. But he enjoyed it, and that’s what mattered.
Anyway, if you wanna know exactly how many days, you gotta use one of them calculator things, I guess. Or ask one of them youngsters. They know all about that stuff. Me? I just wait for the sunshine and the sound of the crack of the bat. That’s when I know it’s baseball season.

And don’t forget, them fellas throw a lotta pitches, maybe 3 or 4 pitches a ball, somethin’ like that. Heard they use about 100 balls a game. That’s a lot of balls!
There’s 30 teams, split into two groups, the American League and the National League. And each league has three parts – East, Central, and West. Just like the country, I guess. Each team plays a whole bunch of games, 162 they say.
