Now, when ya talk about baseball, folks always talk about them right-handed folks, don’t they? But what about the left-handed ones? You know, them rare folks who throw the ball with the other hand? In baseball, we don’t see too many of them playing shortstop. That’s a position usually held by them right-handers. But still, there’s a few left-handed shortstops who made their mark over the years, even though it ain’t the easiest thing in the world for a lefty to play that spot.
First off, ya gotta understand why most shortstops are right-handed. Shortstop’s gotta field balls hit to the left side of the infield, and throw them over to first base quick as a whip. Now, a right-hander’s throwin’ hand is naturally closer to first base, which makes it easier to throw that ball fast and accurate. But for a left-handed fella, he’s gotta do all sorts of awkward movements to make the same throw. It don’t come natural for ’em, and that’s why there ain’t many left-handed shortstops in the big leagues.

One of the few lefties that made it big at shortstop was a fella by the name of Davey Lopes. He weren’t the biggest or strongest, but he had the skills to field the ball and make the throw when it mattered most. Lopes played for teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, and though he wasn’t the most famous fella out there, he sure had some fine seasons.
Another one folks might remember is Ozzie Smith. Now, Ozzie, he weren’t a full-time lefty thrower, but he sure showed how a left-handed player could shine at shortstop if they knew their stuff. He was quick as a rabbit and had some of the best glove work you could see in baseball. Ozzie was more of a switch-hitter, meaning he could bat left or right, but he threw left, and that’s what set him apart from most other shortstops in the game.
It’s important to note that there ain’t been a lot of left-handed shortstops in the history of Major League Baseball. The position requires a lot of quick reactions and precise throwing, and for a lefty, that’s a tough challenge. A lefty usually ain’t gonna throw as fast or as smooth as them righties, so most coaches don’t even consider ’em for that position. They tend to put ’em at first base or the outfield where the throwing ain’t so tricky.
But still, there are those special left-handed players who proved the world wrong. Tracy Woodson was another one who played shortstop for a spell, though he didn’t make a long career out of it. His time in the big leagues might’ve been short, but he showed folks that it could be done, even if it weren’t the norm.
Now, we got folks out there talkin’ about how left-handed hitting players have an advantage when it comes to hitting, but as far as shortstop goes, it’s the opposite. A left-handed batter has an easier time facing right-handed pitchers, and when it comes to hitting, that’s a big ol’ plus. But throwin’ from shortstop? That’s a whole different story. It’s more about getting that ball to first base real quick, and lefties just don’t have the same natural ability to make that throw like the righties do.

That’s why, even though there’ve been a handful of left-handed shortstops, it’s a rare thing to see. And even rarer to see one that really makes it work for a long time. If you ever watch a game and see a lefty out there at shortstop, ya know that’s a fella who’s doin’ something special. They got to work extra hard to make up for what the right-handers got naturally. Ain’t easy, but it’s a mighty impressive thing when they pull it off.
In the end, though, left-handed shortstops just ain’t too common. Whether it’s the throwin’ mechanics or the speed needed to cover all that ground, most coaches just prefer a right-handed fella for that spot. But the few who’ve made it, well, they sure did their part to show the world that sometimes, the rules don’t always apply when you’ve got the talent to back it up.
So next time you’re watchin’ a baseball game and see a left-handed fella playin’ shortstop, give ’em a nod. They’re doing something most folks wouldn’t even think possible. And that, my friends, is something to be proud of!
