Alright, so you wanna know how many doggone teams were in the NBA back in ’69, huh? Well, let me tell ya, it wasn’t like today with all these fancy teams everywhere. Back then, things were simpler, you know?
From what I recall, in 1969, there weren’t a whole heap of teams. It was more like a small get-together compared to the big circus they got now. I remember seein’ some games on that old black and white TV we had, and it seemed like the same few teams always playin’.

Let’s see, I think they had somethin’ like 14 teams in ’69. Yeah, that sounds about right. They added some new ones that year, like the Phoenix Suns and the Milwaukee Bucks. Before that, it was even smaller! Imagine that, just a handful of teams goin’ at it.
- Phoenix Suns
- Milwaukee Bucks
Now, these weren’t the only teams around, mind you. You had your big shots like the Boston Celtics, they were always a tough bunch. And the Los Angeles Lakers, with all their fancy players, they were in there too. Can’t forget about them fellas.
I recollect hearin’ somethin’ about them Celtics winnin’ the whole thing that year, in 1969. They were a real powerhouse back then, always in the runnin’. Folks ’round here, they loved watchin’ them Celtics play. They were somethin’ special, that’s for sure.
But let me tell ya, keepin’ track of all them teams wasn’t easy, especially for an old gal like me. They had these divisions and conferences, East and West, all that jazz. Too much for my head, I tell ya. I just liked watchin’ the games, didn’t care much for all that other stuff.
And you know, things changed pretty quick after that. More teams started poppin’ up, like the Portland Trail Blazers, the Buffalo Braves, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They even split things up into conferences and divisions, makin’ it all official-like. Seventeen teams, can you believe it? That’s a whole lotta basketball players!

It’s funny, ’cause before all that, I remember when they only had like, 9 or 12 teams. Seems like a lifetime ago, you know? Back then, the Detroit Pistons, they were in the Eastern Conference, playin’ their hearts out. And they had this thing where only a few teams made the playoffs. Not like today, where everyone and their brother gets a shot. You had to really earn your spot back then.
So, to make it clear, in 1969, there were 14 teams in the NBA. It wasn’t as big as it is now, but it was still excitin’. Those were the days, I tell ya. Simple basketball, good players, and not too many teams to keep track of. You had your favorites, and you cheered ’em on, week after week.
Nowadays, I can’t even name half the teams, there’s too darn many of ‘em. Back in my day, you knew every player, every coach, practically every referee. You watched those games with your whole family gather ‘round, sharin’ popcorn. Times were different, that’s for sure.
I reckon that’s all I got to say about that. 14 teams in ’69, and the Celtics were the big dogs. That’s the long and short of it, as I remember it anyway. Don’t go quotin’ me on all the details, my memory ain’t what it used to be! But I know what I saw, and those were some good times for basketball.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make myself a cup of tea. All this talkin’ about basketball has made me thirsty! And don’t forget, 14 teams in 1969! That’s the answer you was lookin’ for, right?

And one last thing, they played a whole 82 games a season. Can you imagine that? Runnin’ up and down that court for 82 games! Those boys were tough, I tell ya. Tough as nails.
