Then there’s the look of ’em. Now, some folks like ’em plain, like a white sheet. But others, they want colors, stripes, all sorts of things. It is just like when we make quilts, the different patches make it interesting. How to design tennis shoes that look good? Well, you gotta think about what folks like to see. Bright colors for the young ones, maybe. Or somethin’ more plain for the older folks who don’t want to show off too much.
I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout “graphic design.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? Like drawin’ pictures on a computer. I reckon that’s how they do it these days. Design these tennis shoes on a screen, then they make ’em in a big factory somewhere. I do not know, it is some kind of magic. In my days, things are much simple.

They talk about makin’ drawings, sketches they call ’em. Like drawin’ a picture of the shoe before you make it. Makes sense, I guess. Gotta have a plan, like when you’re plantin’ a garden. You gotta know where everything’s gonna go before you start diggin’.
And they talk about “conceptualization.” Big word, ain’t it? Just means thinkin’ about what you want the shoe to be like. You need to have an idea first, you know? Like, do you want it to be for runnin’ fast? Or for jumpin’ high? Or maybe just for lookin’ good while you’re walkin’ around? I think it is like when you decide what kind of cake you want to bake. What do you want? Chocolate? Lemon? You need to decide first.
These young folks today, they got it easy. They can just go to the store and buy any kinda shoe they want. But back in my day, we had to make do with what we had. Sometimes we even made our own shoes out of old scraps of leather. We didn’t have all these fancy designs, but our shoes were strong, and they lasted a long time. Design your own tennis shoes is a good thing. You make what you like.
And there are some people who design shoes for a living, I heard. They make a living doing that. I guess there are many different jobs in this world, right? You can make money by making shoes. It is just like how some people make money by selling eggs, or growing vegetables. There is always something to do.
This whole thing about making special tennis shoes, it’s somethin’, ain’t it? It just goes to show, things are always changin’. But some things stay the same. You still need good shoes, whether they’re plain or fancy. And you still gotta put in the work to make ’em, even if you’re just drawin’ pictures on a computer.
