Today, I’m going to take you through the process of making a baseball bat. I got curious about this a while back, and let me tell you, it’s more involved than I thought!
Finding the Right Wood
First things first, I had to find some wood. I learned that most pro bats are made from ash or maple. I decided to go with maple because I heard it makes for a harder bat. I went to a local lumber yard and picked out a nice, straight piece of maple. The guy there gave me a weird look when I told him what I was doing, but he helped me find a good piece anyway.

Shaping the Wood
Next, I had to start shaping the wood. I don’t have a lathe, which is what the pros use, so I had to get creative. I used a saw to cut the wood into a rough cylinder, and then used a drawknife and a rasp to start shaping it. This took forever! It was a lot of hard work, and my hands were killing me by the end. I slowly but surely got it into a shape that sort of resembled a bat.
- Used a saw to make a basic cylinder.
- Then used a drawknife to refine the shape.
- Finally, used a rasp to smooth it out.
Smoothing and Finishing
Once I had the basic shape, I had to smooth it out. I used a bunch of different sandpapers, starting with a really rough one and working my way up to a super fine one. This also took a while, but it was worth it in the end. The bat started to feel really smooth and nice in my hands. After I got it sanded down, I applied a coat of wood finish. This will help protect the bat and make it last longer.
Adding the Grip
The last step was to add a grip. I bought some grip tape from a sporting goods store and wrapped it around the handle of the bat. I made sure to overlap the tape a little bit so it wouldn’t come undone. It felt pretty good in my hands, nice and secure. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely a baseball bat. I took it out to the park and hit a few balls with it. It felt pretty good! I’m not sure I’ll be joining the MLB anytime soon, but it was a fun project.
Making a baseball bat was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. I learned a lot about woodworking, and I ended up with a pretty cool bat. If you’re looking for a challenging project, I definitely recommend giving it a try!
