Okay, so, I’ve always wanted a tennis court in my backyard. It’s like a dream, you know? Finally, I decided, “Screw it, let’s do this!” I’m no expert, but I figured, how hard could it be? Turns out, it’s a bit of a project, but totally doable.
Find the Right Spot
First things first, I needed to find a good spot. It had to be flat, obviously, and big enough. I grabbed a measuring tape and started pacing around the yard. I marked out a rectangle, a bit bigger than a standard court, just to be safe. My backyard isn’t huge, but I managed to squeeze it in. It’s important that the place gets good sunlight. And It’s also necessary to think about if the place has deep damp.

Leveling the Ground
Next up, leveling. This was the tough part. My yard was kinda sloped, so I rented a mini-excavator. It’s actually pretty fun to use. I dug out the high spots and filled in the low spots. I spent a good few days on this, moving dirt around, checking the level with a long spirit level, and compacting the soil. It was a workout, let me tell you!
Laying the Foundation
Then came the foundation. I opted for a concrete base. I built wooden forms around the perimeter, all nice and level. Then, I ordered a concrete truck to come and pour the concrete. Watching those guys work was mesmerizing. They smoothed it all out, and I had a perfect concrete slab. It needed time to cure, so I waited a couple of weeks, watering it now and then to help it cure evenly.
Choosing the Surface
Now, the surface. I researched a bunch of options. Grass would be awesome, but way too much upkeep. Clay seemed cool, but I decided on a hard court with an acrylic surface. Seems like the best balance of playability and maintenance. I found a local company that specializes in this, and they came out to apply the acrylic coating. They painted the lines. It looked amazing!
Final Touches
Finally, I installed the net posts and hung the net. I even added some floodlights for evening games. It’s pretty basic, but it does the job. I’ll probably upgrade them later.
So, there you have it. My DIY tennis court. It took a lot of sweat and a bit of money, but it was totally worth it. Now I can play whenever I want. I’m already getting better, and it’s a great way to hang out with friends and family. If you’re thinking about doing it, I say go for it! Just be prepared for some hard work. It’s a rewarding experience, and you end up with your very own tennis court!

Honestly, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Just took some planning and elbow grease. And now, I’ve got the coolest backyard on the block! I should have done it earlier!
