Okay, so I saw this question floating around online: “Does DeChambeau Use a Baseball Grip?” and I got curious. I mean, Bryson’s known for shaking things up, right? So I decided to do a little digging and experimenting of my own.
My Little Experiment
First, I spent some time just watching videos. Lots of videos. Slow-motion swings, close-ups of his hands, everything I could find. I tried to see if it looked like a baseball grip.

Honestly, from just watching, it was tough to tell. It’s close. It’s really close. But it’s not your classic, textbook baseball grip where all ten fingers are clearly on the club, no overlap, no interlock.
Trying It Out Myself
So, next step: I grabbed my own clubs. I figured, why not try it out? I started by mimicking what I thought Bryson was doing, based on the videos. Full disclosure: I’m no pro, just a regular guy who likes to hit the links. I put all ten fingers to the club handle.
- First few swings? Awful. Seriously, I nearly whiffed it a couple of times. It felt so foreign, so unstable.
- Getting used to it: After a few more swings, I started to get a little more comfortable. I could see how, maybe, with a ton of practice, you could generate some power this way. It felt like I had more leverage.
- Control? Nope: But control? Forget about it. My shots were going all over the place. I was slicing, hooking, topping… you name it.
I kept messing around with it, trying to adjust my grip slightly, to see if I could find a sweet spot. I tried to get it to feel more like what I imagined Bryson’s grip felt like, based on all those videos I watched.
My Conclusion (For Now)
Here’s my take: It seems pretty unlikely he uses the full-on ten-finger grip that’s called the baseball grip. After all my experimenting I can confirm that it’s close, maybe a modified version. I can see why people think he might, there are some visual similarities. But I think the standard labels might be a bit too simple, and I think what he is doing, is something else, maybe just a slightly modified interlock or overlap and not the baseball grip.
I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this, and maybe try a few more experiments down the line. For now, though, I’m sticking with my usual grip! No need to mess with a good thing (or at least, a somewhat good thing).
