Okay, so, I’ve been playing fantasy football for years, and I thought I had a pretty good handle on how defense scoring worked. But then, last season, my buddy’s defense put up some crazy numbers, and I was like, “Wait, what?” So, I decided to really dig in and figure this thing out once and for all. Here’s what happened.
Figuring Out the Basics
First, I reviewed the basics, you know, the stuff everyone kinda knows. I always remembered:

- Sacks = points. Good.
- Interceptions = points. Also good.
- Fumble recoveries = good stuff.
- Safeties = awesome!
- Defensive touchdowns = jackpot!
And, of course, the fewer points your defense lets the other team score, the better. That part seemed straightforward.
The “Aha!” Moment
So, I started messing around with the numbers. I grabbed a bunch of box scores from past games and started plugging them into my league’s scoring settings. That’s when it hit me. The range of points allowed matters way more than I realized.
It’s not just, “Oh, they held them under 10, cool.” It’s like, there are these HUGE point swings depending on exactly how many points the defense gives up. My league, for example, gives 10 points if your defense pitches a shutout. But, if they allow just one touchdown, that drops to 7 points. A field goal on top of that? Down to 4. It goes down fast.
Digging Deeper into Yardage
Then there’s yardage allowed. I always kinda ignored that before. I mean, who cares if they give up 300 yards if they only allow 7 points, right? Wrong! My league, and a lot of others, apparently, deduct points for yards allowed too.
I spent a good hour just looking at different league settings. Some are more yardage-sensitive than others. It’s crazy! You could have a defense get a couple of sacks and an interception, but if they also give up 400+ yards, they might barely get you any points. Or even negative points!

Putting It All Together
So, what did I learn from all this? I learned to pay WAY more attention to the details of defense. I used to just look for teams with good sack numbers. Now, I’m checking out:
- Points Allowed Averages: And not just the overall average, but how often they have REALLY bad games.
- Yardage Allowed: Are they consistently giving up a ton of yards, even if they keep the score down sometimes?
- Matchups: Is this defense going up against a high-powered offense? Maybe I should bench them this week.
It’s definitely made me rethink my whole defensive strategy. And it’s probably saved me from a few bad losses already. No more just picking a defense and hoping for the best. Now, I’m actually putting in the work, and it’s paying off! I am feeling so satisfied for my strategy.
