Alright, so y’all wanna know, is tennis gay? I’ve been hearin’ folks whisperin’ and jabberin’ about it, so let’s just get down to brass tacks, shall we? Now, I ain’t no fancy expert or nothin’, just an old woman who’s seen a thing or two, and I can tell ya, tennis is just a game, plain and simple. It’s about hittin’ a ball back and forth over a net, not about who you’re cozyin’ up to at night.
I saw on that there TV box, Badosa and Tsitsipas, they’re a couple, playin’ tennis and whatnot. Folks are makin’ a big fuss, makin’ TikToks and such. They’re just a man and a woman, playin’ a game. Ain’t nothin’ strange ’bout that.

Then there’s this fella, Lendale Johnson. They say he’s the first fella in tennis to come right out and say he’s gay. Good for him, I say. It takes guts to be who you are, especially when folks are gonna judge ya. But see, that’s the thing, it shouldn’t matter if he likes men or women. Can he hit that little yellow ball good? That’s all that should matter in tennis.
- Tennis is for everyone, I tell ya.
- Men, women, young, old, gay, straight, whatever.
- It’s about swingin’ that racket and havin’ some fun.
I heard tell that tennis is one of them sports where men and women play together sometimes. Mixed doubles, they call it. Well, ain’t that somethin’? Men and women, side by side, workin’ as a team. That sounds mighty fine to me. If they can play together, they sure as heck can be friends, or more, if they want. It’s nobody’s business but theirs.
Now, some folks are always tryin’ to stir up trouble, askin’ if there’s more gay fellas in tennis than in other sports. Why does it matter? It’s like askin’ if there’s more left-handed folks playin’ the piano than the guitar. It’s just a silly question. What matters is if they can play the darn thing, right?
I even heard about a fella named Taylor Fritz. He said if a tennis player came out and said he was gay, everyone would be just fine with it. See? Even the players themselves don’t care. They just wanna play tennis and have a good time.
And then there’s this Brian Vahaly fella, they made him President of somethin’ called USTA. Big deal, they say, ’cause he used to play tennis and he’s gay. Well, good for him. Sounds like he knows a thing or two about tennis, and that’s what matters, ain’t it?

So, to get back to your question, is tennis gay? No, it ain’t. Tennis is tennis. It’s a game for everyone. If you like hittin’ a ball with a racket, then go play tennis. Don’t let nobody tell you otherwise. And if you happen to be gay, well, that’s just a part of who you are. It don’t define you, and it sure as heck don’t define the game of tennis.
Don’t go listenin’ to gossip and whispers. Just go out there and enjoy yourself. Life’s too short to worry about what other folks think. You like tennis? You play tennis. That’s all there is to it.
