Alright, so you wanna know if an NFL coach ever got the boot, huh? Like, kicked out of the game, sent packin’? Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t somethin’ you see every day, that’s for sure. It’s like tryin’ to find a needle in a haystack, this thing.
I heard tell of this fella, Joey Porter Sr., a defensive line coach for them Steelers. Folks say he got tossed out of a game against the Bengals once. Now, I ain’t seen it with my own eyes, but that’s the word on the street. Can’t say for sure what he did, but I reckon he musta been raisin’ a ruckus, ya know? Maybe hollerin’ at the refs too much or somethin’. Them coaches, they get all riled up sometimes.

They say head coaches getting tossed out is rare. Shoot, they say it’s never happened before in the whole NFL history! Can you believe that? All them years, all them games, and not a single head coach got the heave-ho. They like to fine ’em, though, that’s for sure. Make ‘em pay up for misbehavin’. But kickin’ ‘em out? Nah, not so much.
Now, players, that’s a different story. I remember hearin’ about this quarterback, Dilfer, back in ’95. He was playin’ for Tampa Bay, and he got into it with some fella from the Vikings. Threw a punch, they say. First quarterback ever to get ejected. Can you imagine that? A quarterback, usually the calmest fella on the field, losin’ his cool like that. Well, I guess everyone has their breaking point.
- They say back in the old days, coaches were on the field with the players.
- Can you believe that? Coaching from the sidelines wasn’t even allowed!
- Then, sometime in the late 1920s, they finally let the coaches stand on the sidelines and do their thing.
- But even then, they rarely got thrown out.
Now, these days, coaches get flagged for all sorts of things. Yellin’ at the refs, steppin’ onto the field when they ain’t supposed to, that kinda stuff. They can even get flagged twice for abusive language, but even if they do get the second penalty, it’s unlikely that they get ejected. I mean, imagine getting so mad you get flagged twice! Must have said some real doozies.
I heard tell of some college coaches bein’ right crazy, real control freaks. But NFL coaches? They mostly keep it together, I guess. They know they gotta set an example for their players, even when things ain’t goin’ their way. They might stomp their feet and yell a bit, but they usually don’t cross the line.
I also heard about a time when a quarterback got hurt real bad and some coach got emotional, but I don’t think that coach got thrown out. See, it’s always the players gettin’ tossed, not the coaches. It’s like the refs got some kinda rulebook just for the coaches, and it says, “You can yell and scream and carry on, but you ain’t gettin’ kicked out.” Maybe they are afraid of what the coaches might say to them after the game if they got ejected.

So, has an NFL coach ever been ejected? Well, from what I hear, it’s mighty rare. Maybe that Joey Porter fella, but head coaches? Nah, they stick around ’til the bitter end. They might get fined, they might get yelled at, but they don’t get the boot. It’s just not something that happens in the NFL, or at least it hasn’t happened with a head coach yet. Maybe someday, some coach will go completely off the rails and get himself tossed, but until then, it’s just a bunch of fines and warnings.
And that’s the long and short of it, as far as I know. Ain’t no easy answer, but that’s life, ain’t it? Sometimes things ain’t black and white. Sometimes they just a whole lotta gray.
