Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about these baseball position numbers, ya know? It ain’t rocket science, that’s for sure. It’s just a way them scorekeeper fellas keep track of who’s doin’ what on the field. Like a shortcut, see?
So, what are these numbers anyway? Alright, let’s start with the pitcher, that’s the fella throwin’ the ball. He’s number 1. Easy peasy, right? Then ya got the catcher, the guy squatting behind home plate, tryin’ to catch that fastball. He’s number 2.

Then comes the infield fellas. First base, that’s the guy standin’ right there, closest to first base, he’s number 3. Second base, a little further out, that’s number 4. Third base, over on the other side, he’s number 5. And the shortstop, the one runnin’ around all over the place, he’s number 6. Now you got all them infield fellas figured out.
Now, let’s move on to the outfield. Left field, that’s the guy standin’ out yonder on the left, he’s number 7. Center field, the one in the middle, chasin’ after them fly balls, he’s number 8. And right field, over on the right side, he’s…well, they usually don’t talk much about right field, but he’s number 9, I reckon.
- 1: Pitcher – the fella throwin’ the ball
- 2: Catcher – the guy catchin’ the ball
- 3: First Baseman – standin’ near first base
- 4: Second Baseman – kinda in the middle there
- 5: Third Baseman – over yonder by third base
- 6: Shortstop – runs around a lot
- 7: Left Fielder – out in left field
- 8: Center Fielder – the one in the middle
- 9: Right Fielder – you know, over on the right
See? Not so hard, is it? Just gotta remember them numbers. It helps when you’re lookin’ at that scoreboard or listenin’ to the game on the radio. They’ll say somethin’ like, “Number 6 made a great play!” and you’ll know it was that shortstop fella.
Why do they even use these numbers? Well, like I said, it’s for keepin’ score. But it’s also for when they’re makin’ changes to the players, ya know? The manager might say, “I need a new number 1,” and that means he wants a new pitcher. Or if someone gets hurt, they gotta bring in a new number somethin’-or-other. It’s just easier than yellin’ out, “Hey, get me a new second baseman over here!” That takes too long, see?
Now, some folks get all fancy about it, talkin’ about “designated hitters” and “pinch runners,” but don’t you worry your pretty little head about that. All you need to know is them basic numbers, 1 through 9. That’ll get you through most baseball games, I tell ya. Them other fellas, they’re just fillin’ in for the main guys, you know what I mean?

And sometimes, you’ll hear talk about “utility players.” Them are the guys who can play more than one position. handy fellas to have around, I reckon. They might be a number 4 one day and a number 6 the next. Just depends on what the team needs.
So, there you have it. Baseball position numbers, plain and simple. Just a way to keep track of who’s who on the field. Don’t let nobody try to make it sound more complicated than it is. It’s just baseball, for goodness sake!
And remember this, even if you don’t know all the fancy rules or strategies, knowing them numbers will make you sound like you know what you’re talkin’ about. And that’s half the battle, ain’t it?
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about them baseball numbers. Go on now, and enjoy the game!
