Okay, let’s get started. Today, I wanted to try something new – drawing an NBA basketball player. I’m no artist, but I figured, why not?
Getting Started
First, I grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil. Nothing fancy, just regular printer paper and a No. 2 pencil I found lying around. I also pulled up some reference photos on my phone. I decided to try drawing LeBron James, because, well, he’s LeBron.

The Basic Shapes
I started by sketching out some basic shapes. You know, like a circle for the head, a rectangle for the torso, and some ovals for the limbs. It looked super weird at this point, more like a stick figure than a basketball player. But I reminded myself that everyone starts somewhere.
Adding Details (or Trying To)
Next, I tried to add some details. This is where things got tricky. I started with the face, attempting to draw his eyes, nose, and mouth. Let’s just say it didn’t look exactly like LeBron. More like LeBron’s distant, slightly confused cousin. The jersey was a bit easier, just a few lines and the number 23.
- I messed up the proportions a few times. His arms were way too long at first.
- I erased a lot. Like, A LOT.
- I kept reminding myself it was okay to not be perfect.
The Basketball
Of course, I had to draw the basketball. I drew a circle (surprisingly difficult to get right) and then added those curved lines that basketballs have. It actually turned out to be the easiest part of the whole drawing!
The Final Result (and Some Laughs)
After about an hour, I decided to call it quits. My drawing was far from perfect, but it was recognizable… kind of. It definitely looked like a basketball player, even if it wasn’t a perfect likeness of LeBron. I showed it to my wife, and she laughed, which was pretty much the reaction I expected.
Even though it wasn’t a masterpiece, I actually had fun doing it. It was a nice break from my usual routine, and it reminded me that it’s okay to try new things, even if you’re not good at them. I recommend everyone give this shot sometime. Grab a pencil, find reference photos, and create a masterpiece of your favorite player!
