Okay, so the other day I was thinking, “Is tennis really dying?” I mean, you don’t see kids playing it in the streets like we used to with, say, basketball or soccer. So, I decided to do some digging, like a mini-investigation of my own.
My Little Experiment Begins
First, I hit up my local park. You know, just casually strolled around on a Saturday afternoon. I counted the number of people playing tennis versus other sports. Guess what? The tennis courts were pretty empty. A few older folks were having a gentle rally, but that was about it. Meanwhile, the basketball courts were packed, and there was a lively soccer game going on.

Next, I checked out a few sporting goods stores. I asked the staff about tennis equipment sales. One guy shrugged and said, “Yeah, we mostly sell basketball shoes and soccer balls these days. Tennis rackets? Not so much.” Another one mentioned that they’d reduced the space allocated to tennis gear because it just wasn’t moving.
Diving into the Online World
Then, I went online. I looked at some Google Trends data. I typed in “tennis” and compared it to other sports like “basketball,” “soccer,” and even “pickleball.” It was pretty clear – interest in tennis, at least in terms of online searches, has been pretty flat, while others are soaring, pickle ball is booming.
Numbers Game
- The tennis participation is stable.
- Interest may be decreasing
- Pickleball is taking off!
My Two Cents
So, after my little adventure, here’s what I think. Tennis might not be “dying” in the sense that it’s going to disappear completely. I think this is just a data for today. But, it definitely feels like it’s losing ground, especially with the younger crowd. Maybe it is just my feeling. It’s a bit more niche, maybe a bit more expensive to get into, and it doesn’t have that same street-level presence. I hope I’m wrong, though, ’cause it’s a great game!
