Oh, boy, let me tell you, getting into that NFL, it ain’t no walk in the park. You gotta be tough as nails and work harder than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest. That’s what they tell me, anyway. My grandson, he dreams of it, bless his heart.
First thing’s first, you gotta play football, and not just in your backyard. You gotta play in high school, and you gotta be good, real good. Then, you gotta go to college and play there for at least three years. Three years! Can you believe it? Time flies when you’re having fun, or getting tackled, I reckon.

Playing in College
Now, college football, that’s where the big dogs play. That’s what they always say. You gotta show ’em what you’re made of. Show ’em you’re the best darn football player this side of the Mississippi. You gotta run fast, hit hard, and never give up, no matter what.
- Run like the wind, they always say.
- Hit like a ton of bricks.
- Never back down, never surrender.
You gotta get yourself noticed by them NFL scouts. They’re always watchin’, lookin’ for the next big star. So, you gotta shine bright, like a diamond in the rough. They say you gotta have good skills, like catching, throwing, and tackling. They like players who are tough and don’t complain. And, most of all, they like winners.
After playing in college for three years, you can put your name in something called a draft. I don’t understand it all, I just know that if a team picks you, you are in. It is as simple as that.
Going to the NFL Combine
Now, before the draft, there’s this thing called the Combine. It’s like a big tryout for all the college players who wanna go pro. They test your speed, your strength, your smarts. It is a tough thing. It’s like runnin’ a marathon while solvin’ a puzzle and gettin’ yelled at all at the same time. They say it’s important to do good at the Combine. It’s your chance to show the NFL teams what you can do. There’s a regional one and a national one. You gotta do good in the regional one first.
You gotta train hard. Real hard. Like you’re training for a fight with a bear. You gotta eat right, sleep right, and practice, practice, practice. You gotta be in tip-top shape, like a fiddle that’s been tuned by a master. They say to do exercises like running, lifting weights, and practicing your football skills.

- Eat your greens, like your mama always told you.
- Get plenty of rest, like a baby after a full meal.
- Practice until you can’t practice no more, then practice some more.
Building Relationships
And you gotta make friends in the right places. They say you gotta “network.” I don’t know much about that fancy word, but I reckon it means you gotta be friendly with the coaches and the scouts and all them important folks. You gotta go to games and events and shake hands and smile. It’s like going to a church social, but with more sweat and muscles.
It’s important to be nice to people. Treat others like you want to be treated. Be respectful, be polite, and always say “please” and “thank you.” That’s what my mama always taught me, and it’s served me well.
Getting into the NFL Draft
After all that, you gotta enter the NFL Draft. That’s where the NFL teams pick the players they want. It’s a big deal, like the county fair, but with more cameras and money. It is a long shot. Many try, but few are chosen. You wait and you wait, and you hope your name gets called. And if it does, well, that’s when the real work begins. They tell me you gotta be three years out of high school before you can enter the draft. Those are the rules.
How can I get into the NFL? Well, it ain’t easy, that’s for sure. It takes hard work, dedication, and a whole lot of luck. But if you got the dream, and you’re willing to put in the work, then maybe, just maybe, you can make it. You can make your dream come true. And wouldn’t that be somethin’? It’s like winnin’ the lottery and findin’ a four-leaf clover all at the same time.
It is a long and winding road, full of bumps and bruises. But if you keep your eyes on the prize and never give up, you might just make it to the NFL. And wouldn’t that be a sight to see? A dream come true, like a fairytale ending. Remember, it is a long shot, but as long as you try your best, that is all that matters.
