Okay, so let’s talk about cleaning a football chin strap. It’s not the most glamorous topic, but hey, it’s gotta be done, right?
So, picture this: I’m out on the field, it’s a hot day, and I’m sweating like crazy. My chin strap is getting all gross, and I know if I don’t clean it, it’s gonna start to stink and probably give me some nasty zits or something. Nobody wants that.
First things first, I took that chin strap off my helmet. It’s usually pretty easy, just a few snaps or maybe some Velcro. Then I looked at the damage. It wasn’t pretty. All that sweat and dirt, maybe a little bit of blood from a previous game, you know how it goes.
I grabbed a bucket and filled it with some warm water. Not too hot, because you don’t want to mess up the plastic or anything. Then, I added a little bit of mild soap. I use dish soap because it is gentle. I figure, if it’s good enough for dishes, it’s good enough for my chin strap.
Next, I threw that dirty chin strap into the soapy water and let it soak for a little bit. Maybe like 5-10 minutes, just to loosen up all that grime.
After the soak, I took an old toothbrush (not my current one, obviously, haha) and started scrubbing. I made sure to get into all the little nooks and crannies, because that’s where the gunk likes to hide. Especially around the padding and any metal parts. The padding usually gets the dirtiest.
- I used the toothbrush to scrub the chin strap.
- I scrubbed all the parts of the chin strap.
- I paid attention to all the corners.
Once I was satisfied with my scrubbing, I rinsed the chin strap under some clean water, making sure to get all the soap off. You don’t want any soap residue left behind, because that can irritate your skin, too.

After rinsing, I patted it dry with a clean towel. Some people might let it air dry, but I like to dry it off so I can use it again sooner. Plus, air drying can sometimes leave water spots, and I’m kind of particular about that.
Extra Tips
I also heard that putting some soft padding between your skin and the chin strap can help prevent irritation. That makes sense, I guess. Less rubbing means less chance of your skin getting angry. And get this – some folks say oatmeal can help soothe irritated skin. Like, you mix oatmeal and water to make a paste and put it on your face. Sounds weird, but I might try it sometime. I’ve had a few games where my chin gets pretty raw, you know?
So, there you have it. That’s how I clean my football chin strap. It’s not rocket science, but it’s important. A clean chin strap is a happy chin strap, and a happy chin strap means a happy football player. Or at least, a less stinky and less pimply one.
Keep it clean, folks!
