Alright, so I’ve been messing around with this Drag Reduction System (DRS) thing in F1 23, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a journey. I mean, I knew it was supposed to help with overtaking and making the car go faster on straights, but actually getting the hang of it took some doing.
First off, I had to figure out where the darn DRS zones even were on each track. You’d think they’d make it super obvious, but nah, you gotta pay attention to the track maps and look for those green lines. I spent a good chunk of time just driving around, trying to spot them, and let’s just say I ended up off-track more times than I’d like to admit.

Once I got a handle on the locations, I started experimenting with when to activate DRS. The game tells you that you need to be within one second of the car in front, but I found that sometimes it would let me use it even if I was a little further back. I did a few laps in Grand Prix mode with equal car performance just to compare my times to the AI’s. Seemed like my times were always off by like a second or so. I think I was hitting it too early or something. It’s like, there’s a sweet spot you gotta find. I kept messing around with the timing, lap after lap.
Then, there’s the whole strategy of it. Do you use it to close the gap? Do you save it for the last second to make a pass? I tried both, and honestly, it depends on the situation. Sometimes, I’d close the gap, but then I’d be too close, and the DRS would turn off before I could make a move. Other times, I’d wait too long, and the other car would just pull away. I even practiced using the button they tell you to use to manually open the rear wing flap. You are supposed to use it in the DRS zones, and it is supposed to help you get a bit of an edge when you are trying to pass the guy in front of you. It’s tough.
But, after a whole lot of trial and error, I finally started to get the hang of it. I could feel the difference when I nailed the activation point. You get this burst of speed, and if you time it right, you can just blast past the other cars. It’s a pretty awesome feeling, especially when you manage to pull off a clean overtake. I’m still not a pro at it, but I’m definitely getting better. It’s one of those things that just takes practice, I guess.
Key things I picked up:
- Finding those DRS zones is the first hurdle. Keep your eyes peeled for the green lines on the track!
- Timing is everything. You want to activate DRS at just the right moment to maximize your speed boost.
- Strategy matters. Think about whether you want to use DRS to close a gap or to make a last-second pass.
Anyway, that’s my experience with DRS in F1 23 so far. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but it’s definitely added another layer of excitement to the game. If you’re struggling with it, just keep at it, and you’ll figure it out eventually!
