Well, so you wanna know if you can switch that tourist visa, the B1 B2 thingy, to a student visa, the F1, right? Let me tell ya, it ain’t as simple as flickin’ a switch, but it ain’t impossible neither. Folks do it all the time, but ya gotta jump through some hoops, that’s for sure.
First off, you gotta be here in the States legal-like, with that B1 B2 visa. Can’t be sneakin’ around, ya hear? And ya can’t just decide overnight, “Oh, I wanna be a student now.” You gotta have a good reason, a real good reason. Like, you found a school, got accepted and all that.

Now, they gonna wanna see some money. Lots of money. School ain’t cheap, ya know. They wanna make sure you ain’t gonna be a burden on nobody. So you gotta show ’em you got enough to pay for school, for livin’, for everything. Bank statements, the whole shebang.
And here’s the tricky part. They call it “temporary intent.” Sounds fancy, but it just means you gotta convince them that you ain’t plannin’ on stayin’ here forever. You’re just here to study, and then you’re gonna go back home. That’s what they wanna hear. If they think you’re tryin’ to pull a fast one, forget about it. They ain’t gonna let ya switch nothin’.
- So, you gotta get yourself a shiny new I-20 form from that school you got into. That’s the paper that says, “Yep, this here person is comin’ to our school.”
- Then, you gotta fill out another form, the I-539. That’s the one that says, “Hey, I wanna change my visa, please.”
- And don’t forget the money! You gotta pay a fee for all this paperwork. They don’t do nothin’ for free, that’s for sure.
Now, when should you do all this? As soon as you know you wanna be a student. Don’t wait till your tourist visa is about to expire. That’s just askin’ for trouble. The sooner the better, that’s what I always say.
Some folks ask, “Can I have two visas at the same time?” Well, sure, if they’re for different things. Like, you can have your B1 B2 for visitin’ and an F1 for studyin’. But ya can’t use them both at the same time, ya know? It’s one or the other. If you’re here on a B1 B2, you gotta get it switched to an F1 before you can start studyin’.
And remember, gettin’ a lawyer ain’t a bad idea. These immigration folks, they got their own rules and regulations, and it can get mighty confusing. A good lawyer can help ya navigate all that mess. It’ll cost ya, but it might be worth it in the long run.

So, can you do it? Maybe. It depends on you, your situation, and how well you can convince them that you’re on the up and up. Just follow the rules, get your paperwork in order, and pray for a little luck. That’s all you can do.
And one more thing. Don’t lie. Don’t even think about fibbin’ on those forms. They’ll find out, and then you’re in big trouble. Just tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothin’ but the truth, so help you God. That’s the best way to go about it, believe me.
