Okay, so I needed to figure out how to fit a new football mouthpiece for my kid. He just started playing this season, and apparently, you gotta boil these things to make them fit right. I had no clue. I mean, who knew, right?
First, I grabbed a small pot from the kitchen – nothing fancy, just a regular one I use for cooking pasta and stuff. Then I filled it up with water, not all the way to the top, just enough to cover the mouthpiece. I put the pot on the stove and turned the burner to high. I waited until the water started boiling like crazy. You know, big bubbles and all that.

Next, I dropped the mouthpiece into the boiling water. It is kind of weird to see a piece of sports gear in a cooking pot, but whatever. I had a pair of tongs nearby – the kind you use for barbecues. Those came in handy to fish out the mouthpiece later, also avoid burning myself.
Now, the tricky part: how long to boil it. I had been doing a bit of reading. Some folks say 30 seconds, others say a full minute. So, I just split the difference and went for 45 seconds. I used the timer on my phone to keep track. Gotta be precise, you know?
- Boil water in a pot.
- Drop in the mouthpiece.
- Wait 45 seconds.
Once the timer went off, I carefully scooped the mouthpiece out with the tongs. I dipped it in some cold water for just a second or two – just enough to cool it down a little so it is not burning hot, but still soft enough to mold, then gave it to my son. He quickly put it in his mouth and bit down hard. I told him to suck on it and press it against his teeth with his fingers to get a good fit.
He kept it in for about a minute, making sure to keep the pressure on. Then, he took it out, and we ran it under cold water again to set the shape. And that was it! It fit perfectly after that. He said it felt way more comfortable than before.
Honestly, it is not rocket science. Just boil, mold, and cool. Now, my kid’s got a custom-fit mouthpiece, and I feel like a bit of a pro. Who would have thought, right?
