Today, I was curious about something totally random – how much do those pit crew members in F1 actually make? I mean, they’re the unsung heroes of those races, right? So, I decided to do some digging.
First, I hit up Google. You know, the usual starting point for these kinds of rabbit holes. I typed in something like “F1 pit crew salary” and scrolled through a bunch of articles.

What I found out
- General Pit Crew: Apparently, your average pit crew member, the ones changing tires and stuff, they’re pulling in around $30,000 to $60,000 a year. Not bad, but not exactly rolling in it.
- Mechanics: These guys, a bit more specialized, they’re looking at $40,000 to $80,000. A bit of a bump up.
- Crew Chief: Now, this is the head honcho. The one calling the shots. They can make anywhere from a decent salary up to a whopping $1 million annually. That’s a pretty wide range!
Then I started thinking, it’s not just about the job title. I bet a team’s success plays a big part. So, I read a bit more and found out that yeah, if the team’s winning and the car’s performing, everyone’s probably doing better, salary-wise. Plus, the bigger the team’s budget, the more they can afford to pay their crew.
I also stumbled upon some interesting tidbits about the drivers’ salaries. I mean, we all know they make bank, but it’s crazy to see the numbers. The top dogs like Max Verstappen are making like $55 million a year, while some of the newer guys are around $1 million. Just shows the huge range in the sport.
So, after all this digging, what’s the takeaway? Well, being on an F1 pit crew seems like a pretty cool gig, but it’s not exactly a path to instant riches for most. Unless you’re the crew chief or on a super successful team. It’s a lot of hard work, crazy pressure, and you gotta be fast. It also got me thinking about how many other jobs are out there that we don’t really think about, and how much those people actually make. Maybe I’ll dive into that next time!
Anyway, that’s my little research adventure for today. Hope you found it as interesting as I did!
