Okay, so I got curious the other day about why some football players wear those tinted visors on their helmets. You know, the ones that look kinda like sunglasses? I’d seen them a bunch, but never really thought about why.
Digging Around a Bit
First, I did what anyone would do – I hit up the internet. I started poking around, just typing in stuff like “football visors” and “why wear football visors.”

- Mostly, I found that it’s about eye protection. Makes sense, right? Flying dirt, fingers, all that stuff could mess up your eyes.
- Some articles mentioned that the tint helps with glare from the sun or stadium lights. Like wearing sunglasses, which seemed obvious.
- And get this, I also read that some players use them because it’s harder for opponents to see where they’re looking! Little bit of a sneaky advantage.
Checking with people
I also asked around, chatting with the guys in our office that into football, I found some answers from them as well.
One of my buddies who played in college confirmed the eye protection thing. He said he got poked in the eye once without a visor, and it was not fun. So, lesson learned, I guess. Another coworker mentioned players with eye sensitivity sometimes need them, which I hadn’t even thought of.
From that, I’m pretty sure I got it figured out, just basic protection, light sensitivity, and a little bit of gamesmanship.
