Well, now, I hear folks been wonderin’ if Ron Shirley ever became the mayor, ain’t that right? Now, I ain’t got all the fancy city papers and things to back up what I’m sayin’, but I can tell ya what I know. So, Ron Shirley, that fella from “Lizard Lick Towing,” he sure got folks talkin’. He’s a big ol’ TV personality, done been on the screen with his wife Amy, workin’ on a towing company in North Carolina. Y’all probably seen them on that show, ‘Lizard Lick Towing,’ what ran from 2011 to 2014. Them folks were somethin’ else, always in some kind of ruckus or another, but they got folks watchin’ for sure. But now, did ol’ Ron ever get himself elected mayor? Well, let me tell ya. No, he didn’t.
Ron Shirley, born in 1972, over there in North Carolina, he ain’t new to the spotlight. He got himself a good bit of fame thanks to that TV show. And let me tell ya, he ain’t shy neither. On the show, they’d show him takin’ care of all them towin’ troubles around town, and some folks thought, “Well, heck, he’d make a good leader!” So, folks got to talkin’ ’bout whether he could make it in politics. He even went and tried his luck, runnin’ to be the commissioner of Wake County. But he didn’t get all the way there neither.
But that ain’t the end of it, no sir. Ron tried somethin’ bigger. He was lookin’ to run for mayor! Now, he ain’t officially made it, but he sure did try. He even got out there tryin’ to get himself enough signatures to run as an unaffiliated candidate, but, like I said, it didn’t quite work out. Politics, it ain’t no easy road, not for anyone, especially when you got folks who ain’t too fond of ya and start makin’ life hard on ya, like old enemies comin’ back to stir the pot. Y’know, a lotta folks think just because you’ve been on TV, you can waltz right into politics, but it don’t work that way. It’s a tough business, full of folks who got their own agendas.
There’s one thing to keep in mind though. Even though Ron Shirley didn’t end up as mayor, he sure got his name out there. People still remember him from the show and his attempts to run for office. It ain’t too common that a tow truck driver gets a shot at somethin’ bigger, so for folks who watched him on TV, that’s somethin’ to talk about. And while the mayoral dreams didn’t come true, Ron and his wife Amy are still out there runnin’ their tow company, keepin’ the Lizard Lick name alive. They might not be mayor, but they sure ain’t forgotten either.
So, did Ron Shirley become mayor? Nope, he didn’t. But he sure did give it a try, and in his own way, he made a mark on the local politics scene. Might not be the mayor, but he sure knows how to make some noise and keep folks talkin’!
