Alright, let’s talk about them boxing gloves, the ones you gotta get to smack that bag or maybe even another fella, though I ain’t recommending that unless you got a good reason.
First off, you gotta figure out what you’re gonna be doin’ with them gloves. You just whacking a heavy bag in your shed? Or are you gonna be goin’ at it with another person, sparring like they call it? That makes a big difference, see. If it’s just you and the bag, you might get away with smaller ones, but if you’re gonna be hittin’ someone else, you need somethin’ with more padding, more cushion, you know?

Now, they got these numbers on the gloves, like 10 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz, 16 oz, and even bigger ones. Don’t get yourself all confused. It’s just about the weight, how heavy them gloves are. And the heavier they are, usually, the more padding they got.
- 10 oz and 12 oz gloves: Them’s the lighter ones. Good for hittin’ the bag, maybe for smaller folks too. But if you’re a big fella, like my grandson Billy, you might need somethin’ bigger.
- 14 oz and 16 oz gloves: Now we’re talkin’ some real cushion. Good for sparring, good for bigger folks, and good if you’re just starting out and don’t want to hurt your hands. My Billy, he uses 16 oz ones, says they feel like pillows on his hands, but he still hits like a mule kickin’.
- Bigger than 16 oz: Them’s for the real big fellas, the ones who hit like a train. You probably ain’t one of them, so don’t worry about it.
They also got them MMA gloves, them little ones with the open fingers. But that’s a whole different story, a whole different kind of fightin’. We ain’t talkin’ about them today. We’re talkin’ about boxing gloves, the ones you use for boxing, see?
Now, how do you know what size to get? Well, it ain’t just about the weight, it’s about your hands too. You got big hands like my husband used to have, you gonna need bigger gloves. You got small hands like my little granddaughter, you gonna need smaller gloves. There’s a way to measure, somethin’ about inches and all that, but I say the best way is to try ‘em on. Go to the store, stick your hand in a few different sizes, see what feels right. They should feel snug, but not too tight. Like a good pair of work gloves, but with more cushion.
And don’t forget about the wraps, them long pieces of cloth you wrap around your hands before you put the gloves on. Them wraps are important, they keep your knuckles and wrists all tight and safe. Don’t go skimpin’ on the wraps, get yourself some good ones, and learn how to wrap your hands right. There’s videos online, my Billy showed me, even an old woman like me can figure it out.
Protection is the main thing, see? You don’t wanna be breakin’ your hands or hurtin’ yourself. Boxing is tough enough as it is, you don’t need to make it harder on yourself. So get yourself some good gloves, the right size, with plenty of padding. And don’t go punchin’ nothin’ you ain’t supposed to be punchin’, you hear?

And one last thing, don’t go buyin’ them cheap gloves neither. You get what you pay for, that’s what my husband always said. Spend a little extra, get yourself some good quality gloves, they’ll last longer and protect you better. And that’s worth a few extra dollars, ain’t it?
Anyways, that’s about all I know about boxing gloves. Hope it helps you out some. Now go on and get yourself some gloves, and get to hittin’ that bag!
