Well, let me tell you, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout them NBA rim things. They was goin’ on and on about how tall they are. Ten feet! Can you believe it? Ten feet up in the air! That’s way up there. I remember back in the day, we just nailed an old peach basket to the barn. Didn’t measure nothin’. Just threw the ball up and hoped for the best.
These young’uns today, they got it all figured out. NBA rim height, they call it. Got their fancy shoes and their fancy courts. Back when I was a girl, we played in the dirt. Didn’t need no standard height. Just needed a ball and somethin’ to throw it through.

They say this ten feet thing, it’s been ’round since the beginnin’. Some fella named James, he started it all. Hung a hoop up on some balcony. Ten feet, they say. Sounds mighty high to me. I reckon it makes the game more excitin’, though. Gotta jump real high to get that ball in there.
- Ten feet high!
- That’s the rule.
- Same for them college boys.
- Even them fellas playin’ overseas.
Now, I heard them talkin’ ’bout how they measure them players, too. With their shoes on, without their shoes on. Seems like a whole lot of fuss if you ask me. Why does it matter if they got their shoes on or not? They still gotta get that ball through that NBA rim, right? Ten feet up in the air, shoes or no shoes.
I seen some of them games on the television. Them boys is tall! Real tall. Makes that ten-foot rim look not so high, I suppose. They just reach right up and dunk that ball in there. Looks easy when they do it. But I bet it ain’t as easy as it looks. Gotta have a lot of practice, I reckon.
They got all these fancy terms, too. NBA standard basketball hoop height. Sounds important, I guess. Keeps things fair, they say. Everyone playin’ by the same rules. That’s important, I suppose. Even in a game, you gotta have rules.
Back in my day, we didn’t have no fancy rules. We just played. Had fun. That’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Havin’ fun. These young folks today, they take it all so serious. NBA rim height this, and NBA standard that. Just play the game, I say!

- They measure the players.
- With shoes and without.
- Seems like a lot of fuss.
- Just get the ball in the hoop!
But I guess that’s just the way it is now. Everything’s gotta be measured and regulated. Ten feet for the NBA rim. That’s the rule. And these players, they gotta be measured, too. With and without shoes. Makes ’em seem shorter, they say, when you measure ’em without their shoes. Don’t make much sense to me, but I ain’t no expert.
I remember one time, my grandson, he was tryin’ to explain it all to me. He was goin’ on and on about NBA Draft Combines and all that. I just nodded my head and smiled. Didn’t understand half of what he was sayin’. But he was excited, and that’s all that mattered.
He’s a good boy, my grandson. Loves that basketball. He’s got a hoop out in the yard. Not ten feet, though. He ain’t that tall yet. But he practices every day. Throws that ball up there, over and over again. He’s gettin’ pretty good, too. Maybe one day he’ll be playin’ in the NBA. Then he’ll have to worry about that ten-foot rim.
I told him, “Just have fun, son. That’s all that matters. Don’t worry too much about these NBA hoop height. Just enjoy the game.” He just smiled and went back to shootin’ hoops. That’s a good boy, always playin’ that basketball. He sure love that game. I don’t know much ’bout it. But I love watchin’ him play. Reminds me of the old days. When we just played for fun. No ten-foot rim to worry about. Just a ball and a basket. And a whole lot of laughter.
Well, I reckon that’s all I got to say about them NBA rims. Ten feet high. Seems mighty high to me. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady. But I do know one thing. Basketball is a good game. Brings people together. And that’s what matters most. Whether the rim is ten feet high or not.
