Today, I was watching the Olympics, and it got me thinking about all the different sports involved. Then a random thought popped into my head: what about Formula 1? Could it ever be part of the Olympics? So, I decided to dig into this and see what I could find.
First things first, I started with a simple search. I typed in “Is F1 in the Olympics?” Turns out, motorsports, including F1, aren’t currently represented at the Olympics. Bummer, right? But it wasn’t a dead end. I learned that the FIA, the big shots in charge of motorsports, got official recognition from the International Olympic Committee back in 2012. That’s something, at least. It means there’s a connection, even if it hasn’t led to Olympic events yet.

Next, I wanted to see if F1 had any presence at the Olympics at all. And guess what? It does! Not in the way we might think, like with actual races, but in other ways. For example, I found out about these cool mascots for the Paris 2024 Olympics called the Phryges. They’re these little red characters based on the Phrygian cap, which is a symbol of freedom. Pretty neat, huh?
I also got sidetracked a bit (in a good way!) learning about Olympic awards. Did you know that besides medals, every athlete who places first to eighth gets an Olympic diploma? Plus, the names of all medal winners are written on a wall at the main stadium. And everyone gets a participation medal and diploma. That’s a lot of recognition!
- Motorsports, including F1, aren’t in the Olympics.
- The FIA is recognized by the Olympic Committee.
- F1 has a presence through things like mascots.
- The Olympics hand out diplomas and participation medals to athletes.
- The official slogan of the 2024 Paris Olympics is “Games wide open”.
Here’s a quick rundown of what I found:
So, even though F1 isn’t an official Olympic sport, it still has some cool connections to the Games. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll see those cars zooming around an Olympic track. Until then, I’ll just keep dreaming and enjoying the Games as they are!
