Okay, so the other day, I was getting ready to go to a baseball game with my buddy, and he asked me a question I’d never really thought about: “What side does the home team sit on?” I mean, I’ve been to tons of games, but I couldn’t picture it right away. So, I started digging.
First, I hit up Google. Just a quick search, you know? I typed in something like “baseball home team dugout side.” I scrolled through a few of the results, and it seemed like there wasn’t one hard and fast rule. Some sites said the home team could choose, others mentioned it was often the first base side, but nothing concrete.

Digging Deeper
Then I thought, “Okay, let’s get more specific.” I started looking at individual team websites. I figured their official pages might have stadium info that would spell it out. I went to a few, like the Yankees and the Dodgers, and poked around their stadium guides. Still, most of them didn’t directly state which dugout was for the home team.
So, I decided to try a different approach. I remembered seeing some stadium seating charts before, so I searched for those. I typed in “baseball stadium seating chart dugout.” This turned out to be a bit more helpful. Some of the images clearly labeled the dugouts as “Home” and “Visitor.”
- I noticed a trend: in many of the charts, the home team dugout was on the first base side.
- But, I also saw some where it was on the third base side. It definitely wasn’t consistent across all stadiums.
The Conclusion (Sort Of)
After all that, I came to the conclusion that there’s no single, universal rule. It seems like it often is the first base side for the home team, but it can vary depending on the stadium. I told my buddy what I found, and we decided to just get to the game early and see for ourselves. And that is my whole story, and how I figure out the answer!
