Okay, so yesterday, I decided to make a football bag. I’ve been needing a new one for ages, and I figured, why not try making one myself? It seemed like a fun little project.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to gather my materials. I went through my old boxes and found some sturdy canvas fabric left over from another project. It was perfect! A nice, durable material that should hold up well.

- Canvas fabric: Found some old scraps, which was great.
- Strong thread: Made sure I had a good, thick thread so the seams wouldn’t burst.
- Zipper: I scavenged one from an old jacket I don’t wear anymore.
- Webbing for the strap: Had some leftover from an old duffel bag.
- Sewing machine: Dusted off my trusty old machine.
- Scissors, pins, ruler: Basic sewing stuff, all ready to go.
The Process
I started by sketching out a basic design. Nothing fancy, just a simple rectangular bag with a zipper on top and a strap. I wanted something practical, not a fashion statement.
Then, I cut out the fabric. I made sure to cut two large rectangles for the main body, and a few smaller pieces for the sides and bottom. It was a bit messy, honestly, with bits of canvas everywhere, I am no professional.
Next up, I pinned the pieces together. This took a bit of time, making sure everything was aligned. Pinning is very important, I always try to get it right.
I started sewing! I began with the sides and bottom, joining them to the main body pieces. The sewing machine whirred away, and slowly but surely, the bag started to take shape. I made a few mistakes, had to rip out some seams and start again, but hey, that’s part of the process, right?
The zipper was the trickiest part. I’ve always found zippers a bit fiddly. It took a couple of tries to get it sewn in straight, but eventually, I managed it. I tested it a few times, zipping and unzipping, just to make sure it worked smoothly. It did!

Finally, I attached the webbing strap. I double-stitched it to make sure it was extra secure. Can’t have the strap breaking when I’m carrying a heavy ball, right?
The Finished Product
And there it was! My very own, handmade football bag. It’s not perfect, the seams are a bit wonky in places, and the zipper isn’t exactly laser-straight, but it’s mine, and it works. It’s big enough to hold my football, my boots, and a water bottle, which is all I really need.
I’m pretty chuffed with how it turned out. It was a fun little project, and I saved myself some money by not buying a new bag. Plus, I got to use up some old materials that were just gathering dust. Win-win!
