Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into NBA stats and team needs lately, and one question keeps popping up: Which NBA team really, desperately needs a point guard?
I started by just watching a bunch of games. You know, actually seeing how teams play, who’s handling the ball, who’s making plays, and who’s, well, not making plays. It’s one thing to look at numbers, but the eye test tells you a lot.

My Research Process
After I watched, I grabbed all the team rosters I could find. Then I started digging into individual player stats – things like assist percentage, turnover rate, usage rate, and even some advanced metrics like assist-to-turnover ratio. I dumped all this stuff into a giant spreadsheet.
Here is what I considered:
- Teams with high turnover rates: This often signals a lack of a true floor general to control the ball.
- Teams with low assist numbers: If nobody’s passing, there’s probably not a great point guard dishing out dimes.
- Young teams with potential: These teams might have all the pieces except that experienced, playmaking guard.
- Teams relying heavily on one player for all the ball-handling: If that one player gets injured or has an off night, the whole offense falls apart.
Then, I started noticing that that, for most teams, there is not a real point guard in the team. Some of them are shooters, not point guards, they just focus on scoring. But for some of the team, if there is no qualified point guard, the team just can not run smoothly. After I combined my game observations with the stat deep-dive. It’s like putting together a puzzle, slowly seeing the full picture.
So, that’s where I’m at now. Still working on my final conclusion, but I’ve got a few strong contenders for the “Most in Need of a Point Guard” award!
