Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about them baseball games over in Japan, the ones with the fellas hittin’ the balls and runnin’ around. Folks keep askin’ if you can keep the balls you catch, and it ain’t as simple as yes or no, ya know?
Professional Games – Keepers!

Now, in them big professional games, the ones with all the fancy players and big crowds, if a ball flies up into the stands and you catch it, well, it’s yours! Yep, you get to keep it. Just like findin’ a shiny penny on the ground, only bigger and rounder. Them fellas hit that ball so hard, it’s a wonder it don’t go right through your hand, but if you catch it, it’s your lucky day. You can take it home and show it off to your grandkids, or put it on the shelf next to the pickle jars, whatever tickles your fancy.
But hold on a minute, there’s always a “but,” ain’t there? If that ball is somethin’ special, like if it’s the one that some fella hit his 100th home run with, they might ask you for it back. Now, they ain’t gonna just snatch it outta your hands, no sir. They’ll give you somethin’ for it, like a signed hat or a picture with the player. That way, everyone’s happy, see? You get a little somethin’ special, and they get their special ball back.
Minor League Games – Not Always Keepers
Now, them smaller games, the ones with the younger fellas tryin’ to make it big, well, they might ask you to give the ball back. See, they don’t have as many balls as them big fellas, and they gotta save money where they can. So if you catch a ball at a minor league game, don’t be surprised if a young fella comes up and asks for it back real polite-like. Just hand it over, it’s for the good of the game, ya know?
Foul Balls – Nope, Gotta Throw ‘Em Back

And another thing, if the ball goes foul, you gotta throw it back. Don’t go tryin’ to sneak off with a foul ball, ’cause they got folks watchin’, and that ain’t right. Foul balls ain’t for keepin’, them’s the rules, plain and simple. It’s like borrowin’ sugar from your neighbor, you gotta give it back.
- Big League Games: Catch a regular homer or a fly ball? It’s yours! Special ball? Might have to trade it for somethin’ nice.
- Minor League Games: They might need that ball back, so be a good sport and hand it over if they ask.
- Foul Balls: Toss ’em back, no keepin’ them. That’s just how it is.
Japanese Baseball – A Little Different
Now, this Japanese baseball, it ain’t exactly like the baseball we play here. For one thing, them games can end in a tie. Can you believe that? A tie! Here, we play until someone wins, even if it takes all night. But over there, if they play enough innings and the score is still tied, well, that’s it, game over. Ain’t nobody winnin’ or losin’. Just a big ol’ tie.
And them games are only nine innings long, most of the time. Unless it’s a tie, then they might play a few extra, but not too many. They got a time limit, ya see, so they gotta keep things movin’. They ain’t got time for them 18-inning marathons like we do sometimes. Gotta go home sometime, right?
Keepin’ the Ball – Taxes and Such?

Now, I heard some folks talkin’ about how you gotta pay taxes on them balls you catch. Can you believe that? Taxes on a baseball! Somethin’ about it bein’ like findin’ treasure. Well, I ain’t never paid taxes on a baseball, and I ain’t plannin’ on startin’ now. But then again, I ain’t never caught a ball worth a whole lot of money neither. Just somethin’ to keep in mind, I guess, if you catch one of them fancy balls.
Bottom Line
So, there you have it. Can you keep a ball at a Japanese baseball game? Most of the time, yes, if you catch it fair and square in the big leagues. But there’s always them rules and exceptions, so keep your ears open and pay attention. And remember, foul balls are for throwin’ back, and be nice to them minor league fellas, they need them balls. And be careful not to start fightin’ over a ball, it ain’t worth it, y’all.
Now, go enjoy the game and catch yourself a ball! But don’t get too rowdy, ya hear?
