Alright, alright, let’s talk about this… what’s her name? Ah, yes, A. Kovaleva. This girl, she plays tennis, you know? Like, with the rackets and the fuzzy balls. I watched her on that… whatchamacallit… the TV, yeah, the TV! She’s somethin’ else, let me tell ya.
This Kovaleva, she’s been hittin’ those balls real good lately. Seen her winnin’ and losin’, but mostly winnin’, I think. They got these things called “scores,” and hers are usually pretty high. Unless she’s havin’ a bad day, you know? We all have those. Even me, when I try to swat them flies in the kitchen, sometimes I miss.

- She hits the ball hard, real hard.
- She runs fast, like a chicken chasin’ after corn.
- She yells sometimes, but that’s just how they do, I guess.
They got this thing, the ITF somethin’ or other, and they say she’s good. Real good. They give her awards and stuff. I don’t know much about that ITF stuff, sounds fancy. But if they say she’s good, then she must be good. They wouldn’t lie, would they?
Now, this Kovaleva girl, she plays against other girls. One time, I saw her play this Avdeeva girl. Tough match, that one. Back and forth, back and forth. Like watchin’ two cats fightin’ over a fish head. But Kovaleva, she pulled through. She won! Got them points and whatnot.
You can find all this stuff online, they tell me. Scores, they call ’em. And draws, whatever those are. And somethin’ called H2H, which sounds like somethin’ you do with your hands, but I guess it’s about how they play against each other. It’s all on that there internet, my grandkids showed me, this thing called Flashscore, got all the tennis numbers you could ever want.
They got these “stats” too. That’s like numbers, I think. How many times she hits the ball in, how many times she hits it out. How fast she runs, how hard she serves. All that stuff. It’s important, they say. Helps you figure out who’s gonna win, I guess. But sometimes, I just like watchin’ the ball go back and forth. It’s kinda hypnotizin’, you know?
Kovaleva’s got these “highlights,” they call ’em. Like the best parts of her matches. You see her smacking that ball, running all over the place, and yellin’ again. It’s kinda fun to watch, even if you don’t know much about tennis. It’s like watchin’ fireworks, lots of fast movements and excitement.

This “ranking” thing, that’s important too, apparently. Tells you where she stands in the world of tennis. Like, is she the best? Is she almost the best? Or is she just, you know, okay? Kovaleva, she’s up there, I think. Climbin’ the ladder, as they say. Good for her, I say. Workin’ hard and gettin’ somewhere.
Anastasia Kovaleva’s a tennis player, plain and simple. She hits the ball, she runs around, and she tries to win. Sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn’t. But she keeps on tryin’. And that’s all you can ask for, right? Just keep on tryin’ , like me tryin’ to get this darn jar of pickles open, sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t but you just gotta keep on tryin’.
They got news about her too, this Kovaleva girl. What she’s doin’, where she’s playin’, how she’s feelin’. It’s like followin’ a soap opera, but with tennis. You get invested, you know? You start rootin’ for her, even if you don’t know her from Adam. She seems like a nice girl though, works hard, all that runnin’ around must be tiring.
And they got videos, lots and lots of videos. Of her playin’, of her practicin’, of her talkin’. You can watch her all day long if you want. I don’t have time for all that, got to much to do, plants need waterin’, chickens need feedin’, but those grandkids of mine, they sure like watching her on that phone of theirs.
So, that’s what I know about A. Kovaleva. She’s a tennis player, she’s pretty good, and she’s got people talkin’. And that’s enough for me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about tennis has made me hungry, maybe I should have some of them pickles with dinner tonight.
