Alright, let’s gab about who had the best defense in the NFL last year, you know, the 2023 season. I ain’t no fancy expert, but I watch them games, and I see what I see.
Now, lots of folks, they get all tangled up in numbers and stats and all that jazz. Yards per play, points per drive, sack percentages… Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. I just look at who kept the other team from scorin’ much, plain and simple. Who was tough as nails and didn’t let the other fellas run all over ‘em? That’s what I wanna know.

From what I gathered, there were a few teams that stood out. The Philadelphia Eagles, they were somethin’ else. Heard they were real good at stoppin’ folks, had a real stingy defense. They was winnin’ games, and a good defense, that’s how you win games. You gotta stop the other team, otherwise they gonna run up the score on ya.
Then there was them Tennessee Titans. Now, I don’t know much about Tennessee, but I heard tell they had a pretty mean defense too. Kept teams from gettin’ too many points, that’s for sure. Probably had some big, tough fellas on that line, stoppin’ those runners and sackin’ the quarterback. That’s important.
- Stopping the run
- Sacking the quarterback
- Not letting them score
And don’t forget the Denver Broncos. They was another team that folks kept sayin’ had a good defense. Heard they had some real playmakers on that side of the ball, guys who could cause fumbles and interceptions and such. Turnovers, that’s big. If you can take the ball away from the other team, that’s as good as stopping ‘em.
Some other names I heard thrown around were the New York Jets, the Houston Texans, and that San Francisco 49ers team. Heard they had some fancy players, like that Sauce Gardner fella and Nick Bosa. Big names, I guess. Must be doin’ somethin’ right if folks are talkin’ about ‘em.
Now, some folks, they like that 3-4 defense, whatever that is. Heard the Pittsburgh Steelers been doin’ that for years and had some success with it. I don’t know the difference between a 3-4 and a 4-3 or whatever else they got. All I know is, you gotta stop the other team, plain and simple.

I also heard about them fantasy points and all that. Folks playin’ these games on their computers and phones, pickin’ defenses and whatnot. Heard the Baltimore Ravens was a good pick sometimes. But me, I’m just lookin’ at who’s winnin’ games and who’s keepin’ the other team from scorin’. That’s the best defense in my book.
So, who really had the best defense last year? Well, it’s hard to say for sure. Lots of good ones out there. But if I had to pick, I’d say it was probably one of them top teams I mentioned earlier. The Eagles, the Titans, maybe the Broncos. They were the ones stoppin’ folks and winnin’ games. And that’s what matters, right? Winnin’ games.
At the end of the day, the best defense is the one that helps your team win. It don’t matter how fancy they look or how many stats they rack up. If they can keep the other team from scorin’ and give your offense a chance to win, that’s all that matters. That’s a good defense. And those teams I talked about, they did that pretty darn well last year. So, they was the best, far as I’m concerned.
Remember, this is just my opinion, you know. I ain’t no fancy sports writer or nothin’. Just a regular person who watches the games and knows what she sees. And what I saw last year was some good defenses, some real tough teams that could stop the other fellas from runnin’ all over ‘em. And that’s good football, right there.
It’s about being tough, playing hard, and not lettin’ the other team get the best of you. That’s football, that’s defense, and that’s how you win championships. So next year, we’ll see who’s the toughest. But last year, it was those teams I told ya about. You can take that to the bank.
