Okay, so I saw some folks online arguing about how many overtakes there were in the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. Some said it was a snoozefest, others claimed there was actually a decent amount of action. I got curious, so I decided to dig in and figure it out myself.
First, I tried to find an official source. You know, like an FIA document or something, but I came up empty. Seems like they don’t just hand that info out on a silver platter.

Next, I hit up some F1 forums and fan sites. Lots of opinions, but not a lot of hard data. People were throwing around numbers, but nobody seemed to have actually, like, counted.
So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I grabbed a replay of the race and settled in for a long afternoon. My method was pretty simple: every time I saw a car pass another car on track, I’d make a note. I wasn’t counting pit-stop overtakes, just the on-track battles.
The tedious work begins
- I rewatch the race and record the overTakes one by one.
It took a while, and honestly, my eyes started to glaze over a bit. Monaco’s tight, twisty circuit makes it hard to pass, so there weren’t a ton of overtakes. But there were some, especially in the midfield.
After all that, I have to check how many overtakes. It wasn’t as many as some other races, that’s for * it wasn’t zero, either.I have done my counting and share it to the guys who want to know it.
