Alright, so you wanna know how to win a baseball game, huh? Well, it ain’t rocket science, I tell ya. It’s just like my old man used to say, “Get more runs than them other fellers, and you win.” Simple as that.
First off, you gotta understand the game. Two teams, see? They take turns hittin’ and catchin’ a ball on a big ol’ diamond thing. They got these bases, first, second, third, and home, kinda like runnin’ around the kitchen table, but bigger. You hit the ball and run around them bases. More times you run around, more runs you get. Team with the most runs after nine innings, they win. Sometimes it ends early, but mostly it’s nine.

Now, how do you get them runs? Well, you gotta hit the ball, that’s for sure. And not just little dinky hits, gotta smack it good! My grandson, he plays a bit, and he tells me about these “home runs.” That’s when you hit the ball so hard it flies way out, and you get to run all the bases at once! That’s a good way to get a lot of runs fast.
But hittin’ ain’t everything. You gotta have good pitchin’ too. That’s the feller who throws the ball. He gotta throw it so them other fellas can’t hit it good, or better yet, they miss it altogether! They got all sorts of fancy throws, fast ones, curvy ones, I don’t even know what all. But the point is, keep them from hittin’ the ball hard.
- Good Pitchin’
- Good Hittin’
- Good Catchin’
And then there’s catchin’. You gotta catch the ball when they hit it, else they get to run around them bases. And sometimes, they gotta catch it real fast and throw it to another fella to get them other fellas out. It’s all a big ol’ game of throw and catch, really. My neighbor’s kid he is a catcher, always wearin’ all that gear, look like a robot out there, but he is good at catching the ball, nobody can run when he is catching.
My grandson also told me some other things. Like sometimes the pitcher, he does something wrong, they call it a “balk” or something. I don’t rightly understand it all, but it lets the runners move up a base. So you gotta be careful not to do that if you’re pitchin’. And if you’re runnin’ the bases, you gotta be smart, you know? Don’t get caught stealin’ a base unless you’re sure you can make it. It’s like when you are stealing cookies from the cookie jar, you gotta be fast and make sure nobody catch you.
So, to win a baseball game, you need good pitchin’, good hittin’, and good catchin’. And you gotta play smart. Don’t make mistakes, and take advantage of the other team’s mistakes. It’s like my grandma used to say, “Keep your eyes on the ball and your head in the game.” That’s all there is to it.

And don’t forget, baseball is a long game, nine innings is a lot of time. You gotta keep focus, keep your energy up, and keep playing hard, even if you are losing. I’ve seen games where one team is way behind, and then they come back and win in the last inning. So never give up! Just keep playin’ hard and do your best. And remember what my grandpa always said, “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”
Fundamentals, that’s another thing my grandson is always talkin’ about. It just means doin’ the little things right. Catchin’ the ball clean, throwin’ it straight, hittin’ the ball solid. If you do all them little things right, the big things will take care of themselves. It ain’t always about hitting a home run, sometimes a little hit is good enough, get on base, then someone else get a hit and get you in, that’s how you score runs, little by little.
So there you have it. That’s how you win a baseball game, according to this old lady. Get more runs than the other team, pitch good, hit good, catch good, and play smart. And most importantly, have fun! It’s just a game after all, right?
