So, I wanted to get a new baseball glove, but I wasn’t sure about the size. I mean, how do you even figure that out? I did some digging and found it’s actually pretty straightforward. Here’s how I did it, step by step:
First, I grabbed a flexible measuring tape, the kind you use for sewing. You know, those soft ones that can bend easily. Then, I placed the end of the tape right in the center of my palm. I made sure it was snug but not too tight.

Next, I measured from the center of my palm up to the tip of my index finger. I extended my hand out flat, fingers straight, just like I would if I were catching a ball. I kept the tape close to my hand, following the natural curve.
I wrote down that measurement. Mine came out to about 7 inches. Then, I learned something crucial: glove sizes are based on the length from the heel of the glove to the top of the index finger along the palm side, not just your hand measurement.
So, I used a little trick I found. I multiplied my hand measurement by two. That gave me 14 inches. I figured this would be a good starting point for the glove size, but obviously you may need to adjust the size based on your field position.
I also learned that different positions might need slightly different sizes. For instance, infielders usually use smaller gloves for quicker transfers, while outfielders might prefer a bit larger for a bigger catching area. I play infield, so I kept that in mind.
Lastly, I went to a sports store to try on a few gloves around that 14-inch mark. Some felt too loose, some too tight. I found one that was just about 11.5 inches, and it felt perfect. It was snug but not restrictive, and I could easily open and close it.

- Measure your hand from palm to fingertip.
- Multiply by two to estimate glove size.
- Consider your position for the right fit.
- Try on different gloves to find the best one.
That’s it! Now I have a glove that fits great and feels comfortable. It was much easier than I thought it would be. If you are looking to get a new glove yourself, just remember these steps!
